I am forever grateful to be living and learning on the traditional, unceded territories of the Tk’emlúps te Secwe̓pemc People. I thank them for the use of their sacred land.

These standards are imperative for us teachers to remain as professional as possible and necessary. As with any job, we need rules to govern our behaviour and how we work. In addition, there has to be protection for students as they are most definitely the most vulnerable demographic on earth. Because they are so impressionable we have to ensure we are neutral in how we deliver opinions and ideologies, while welcoming and respecting any differences they may have. This list incorporates pretty much every aspect of education and is immensely valuable in helping us understand how to interact with parents, how we are supposed to be always learning ourselves, and how we have to equally value Indigenous ways of knowing and learning. Despite a few of the standards being sort of self-explanatory, they are good to have on paper and accessible for our reference. Most of us have a general idea of how to act on the job, but don’t know the specifics we are held to.
